A trooper,  Aaron Tiso of the State Police barracks in  Wappinger, was grazed by a bullet during the standoff with a Wappiner man following a domestic dispute. He was treated and released from Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital.

The incident started around 7:32 p.m., Monday, Sept. 2, when police received a 911 call for a disturbance on Marlorville Road in the Town of Wappinger.

Upon arrival, troopers located the caller, standing in the roadway stating the suspect, Christopher DeMilio, 47, was inside with two children, state police said.

As troopers approached the home, DeMilio let the two children out the front door of the residence, then went back inside, according to police.

Once back in the home, DeMilio fired multiple shots at patrols from a second-floor window, and then through the front door, one of the rounds grazing the arm of Tiso, said police.

Troopers were able to secure the children from the residence, and get to a safe location.

A perimeter was established around the home and state police crisis negotiators arrived, and started negotiations with DeMilio.

Negotiations continued for several hours with DeMilio continuing to fire rounds within the residence, police said.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., DeMilio surrendered and was taken into custody by members of the State Police Special Operations Response Team.

DeMilio is charged with five counts of first-degree attempted murder, one count of criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal possession of a weapon.

DeMilio was arraigned before the town of Wappinger Court, and remanded without bail to the Dutchess County Jail. He is due to reappear in court on Monday, Sept. 9.

State Police were assisted at the scene by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, Village of Wappingers Falls Police, MTA Police, Town of Fishkill Police, and the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response.

State police then set up a perimeter and began negotiations with the man, who sources said was holding a woman and children and was yelling at police during talks.

The man was taken into custody around 2:25 a.m., without further incident, multiple sources said.

A woman and two children were seen being removed from the scene as some point during the event.

State police said the incident began with a domestic dispute but did not offer further details, including the man's identity.

The injured trooper was said to have suffered a minor injury.
